Ashburton District Council has just completed a major upgrade to the region's 65-year-old sewer system.
The final connection from the new 700mm diameter Ashburton Borough Sewer Pipeline to the old 450mm diameter sewer took place this week, heralding a new age for the sewer system which was built in 1949.
Ashburton Contracting Limited started the project in May. Project and Operations manager Viv Eyberg says the final connection ends "seven months of hard work" and a $1.8 million contract.
"The pipeline has been operating at full capacity and due to significant deterioration over the last 65 years it had reached the end of its life," Eyberg says.
"It has now been replaced with a larger pipeline to allow for future development as well as eliminating the maintenance needed to keep the old pipe in service."
The removal of the old pipe remains should be finished by the end of December.
