Draft Waste Minimisation and Management Plan
We are no longer accepting submissions on the Draft Waste Management and Minimisation Plan.
We are reviewing our Waste Management and Minimisation Plan.
In 2020, nearly 4000 tonnes of material was prevented from going to landfill, through recycling and reuse. That’s a great result, but we want to do better. We're aiming to further reduce landfill waste over the next six years through a series of proposed actions in this draft plan.
Should we introduce a food waste collection?
A 2021 waste audit discovered that approximately 40% of our kerbside rubbish collection is food waste, which is transported to landfill at significant cost. Diverting this from landfill is our single biggest opportunity to lower our waste volumes and decrease greenhouse gas emissions.
In other districts, this kind of service costs about $50 per household per year or roughly $1 per week. We expect it would be a similar cost here, but we’ll need look into it more closely.
If the community supports food waste collection, we'll investigate further and report back with details on cost and how the service would operate, most likely during consultation on our 2024 Long Term Plan.
Other Key Changes:
The draft plan contains actions across a range of areas such as public education, infrastructure and collection services. Key actions include:
- Working with waste management providers to encourage uptake of green waste collections
- Extending kerbside recycling collection to businesses on a user-pays basis
- Providing a transfer station in Methven as previously planned
- Introducing a user-pays collection of reusable items directly from properties
- Requiring registration of waste-management operators
