The council provides a network of pipelines (and open drains) that collect, convey and dispose of urban stormwater.  The most comprehensive piped stormwater network serves the Ashburton town with more limited networks in Methven and Rakaia. There are also some open drains in the Hinds township maintained by the council. 

Maintenance
The pipelines in the stormwater network are maintained by the council's operation and maintenance contractor (Ashburton Contracting Limited - Telephone 308 4039).

The maintenance of sumps and grates which collect the stormwater is carried out by the council's roading maintenance contractor (Fulton Hogan Limited - Telephone 308 2418).
