REDUCED STOCKWATER SERVICE – 22 AUGUST TO 7 SEPTEMBER 2009 INCLUSIVE
The District Council has been advised by Rangitata Diversion Race Management Ltd (RDRML) of their intention to shutdown the Rangitata Diversion Race through the above period to allow for improvements to be undertaken to their infrastructure.
The stockwater races on your property are supplied through the Council’s Klondyke stockwater intake. When the RDR is in normal operation, the Klondyke intake flows under gravity. Throughout the period of the proposed shutdown, water will be supplied to the Klondyke intake via a syphon supply.
While every endeavour will be made to maintain a satisfactory supply to all properties during the shutdown, some customers may experience periods of reduced flows.
There are a number of strategies which may lessen the impact of the reduced flows on individual properties during the period of the RDR shutdown. These are listed below:
Before Shutdown – 22 AUGUST 2009
· Inspect and have races cleaned before 22 August. Clean water races will ensure water gets to where it is needed and helps maintain a better downstream flow.
· Install stockwater drinking bays for bovine stock.
· Consider reducing stock loadings during this period.
· Installation of new or increased volume of on-property water storage; particularly if you are reliant on the stockwater races for household or troughed stockwater supply.
· Identify side or loop races that could be temporarily shutdown. Discuss these with your neighbours and advise Council.
During Shutdown – 22 AUGUST TO 7 SEPTEMBER 2009
· Inspect all races on your property regularly to ensure they are flowing freely.
· Restrict bovine stock access to races through defined drinking bays only.
· Advise the Council immediately of any water race problems (i.e. blockages or water quantity issues) that you cannot manage on your own.
Please contact the Council office on 307 7700 if you have races you require to be operational and where you will have high concentrations of stock. This will enable us to shut unused races through this low flow period.
