The Ashburton District Council provides an Environmental Health service:
- To protect public health and safety.
- To promote and protect the natural and physical environment
- To protect the public from nuisance
How this service is provided:
- Environmental Health Officers (EHO's) inspect 350 premises to ensure minimum standards of health are maintained. Premises include:
- Food premises
- Hairdressers shops
- Camping grounds
- Offensive trades
- Swimming pools and spas
- Mobile shops & food stalls
- Rest Homes
- Nuisances such as litter, smoke, odours, vermin, insects, and noise, are investigated and resolved.
- Notifiable infectious diseases are investigated.
- Monitoring of drinking water quality
- Reporting on health aspects of certain applications under the Building Act and Resource Management Act
- Recreational bathing - rivers and lakes
- Assorted environmental testing and survey work including sewerage effluent, toxic, hazardous substances etc.
- Bylaw enforcement
- Litter control including infringement notices
