Feeding Ducks down at the Ashburton Domain


The Ashburton District Council provides an Environmental Health service:

  • To protect public health and safety.
  • To promote and protect the natural and physical environment
  • To protect the public from nuisance

How this service is provided:

  1. Environmental Health Officers (EHO's) inspect 350 premises to ensure minimum standards of health are maintained.   Premises include:

    • Food premises
    • Hairdressers shops
    • Camping grounds
    • Offensive trades
    • Swimming pools and spas
    • Mobile shops & food stalls
    • Rest Homes

  2. Nuisances such as litter, smoke, odours, vermin, insects, and noise, are investigated and resolved.
  3. Notifiable infectious diseases are investigated.
  4. Monitoring of drinking water quality
  5. Reporting on health aspects of certain applications under the Building Act and Resource Management Act
  6. Recreational bathing - rivers and lakes
  7. Assorted environmental testing and survey work including sewerage effluent, toxic, hazardous substances etc.
  8. Bylaw enforcement
  9. Litter control including infringement notices
