Ashburton Town Centre Concept Plan

The Council has produced a Town Centre Concept Plan which provides the Council with a basis for planning and delivering improvements in Ashburton Town Centre over the long term. The Concept Plan identifies 18 projects that could revitalise the town centre and make it a more attractive place to work, live and visit. These projects cover public spaces including squares, parks and roads, as well as private land which the Council will work with landowners to enhance.

The Concept Plan enables the Council to better co-ordinate any works it undertakes within the town centre and provides clear direction and awareness amongst individuals, businesses and interest groups.

The Concept Plan was informed by public consultation, which identified a number of issues and aspirations individuals and groups have for the town centre. The public were also asked for their preferences on a range of options for the direction the town centre grows, the projects that could revitalise the town centre, and the areas that there should be stronger links with including the Domain and River.

The projects with most support included

o Baring Square

Creating a heart in the town centre that people feel is the centre of Ashburton and the local community are proud of

o Green Corridor

To improve the green space between the Domain and River, creating stronger links with these areas

o Lanes

To provide alternative routes for people to walk along and create better links within the town centre

The next step is to take the projects to a more detailed level including the preparation of design options for spaces such as Baring Square and consultation on these options. Funding will be sought for implementing these projects through the Annual Plan and Long Term Council Community Plan processes.

The Concept Plan is available to download from this webpage.
