Civil Defence Emergency Management Act 2002
The Civil Defence Emergency Management Act 2002 is the legislation under which the Ashburton District Council is obligated to prepare for Civil Defence events within Ashburton District.
Civil Defence Emergency Management (CDEM) Group
Section 12 of the act requires all local authorities within a region to unite to establish a Civil Defence Emergency Management (CDEM) Group.
The Canterbury CDEM Group was formed on April 28 2003.
It is all about local authorities, 111 services and a large number of related groups working together with a high degree of co-operation to achieve a common purpose in the field of emergency management.
The contributing local authorities are:

Banks Peninsula District Council
Christchurch City Council
Environment Canterbury
Hurunui District Council
Kaikoura District Council
Mackenzie District Council
Selwyn District Council
Timaru District Council
Waimakariri District Council
Waimate District Council
Ashburton's Obligations
As part of our commitment to this group the Ashburton District Council is required to:
Contribute to the development of a co-ordinated CDEM Group plan for how our group manages our hazards.
Plan to provide for civil defence emergency management in Ashburton District.
Ensure our council is able to function to the fullest possible extent during and after an emergency.
Ashburton District Civil Defence Plan
Until the group plan comes into effect (2005) the current Ashburton District Plan remains operative.
