Council provides for safe buildings through issuing building consents and inspecting building work, which has to comply with national standards. Action may be taken against substandard work.

For the period July 2006 to July 2007, building consent values have increased by 32%.

New dwellings within Ashburton District have increased by 29% for the same period.

The Building Act

The Building Act 2004 has now been in place for 3 years with some amendments made in 2005.  The Act is about improving control and encouraging better practices in building design and construction to ensure buildings are built right first time.

Information regarding the Building Act 2004 can be found within the Councils’ Questions and Answers Document or at the Department of Building and Housing and ConsumerBuild websites.
