The Council is currently having detailed plans prepared for the redevelopment of Baring Square East following the adoption of a preferred design (see link to ‘Developed Design’). The preparation of these plans involves input from staff and consultants on matters such as parking and vehicles movement around the square, managing stormwater from the square and details such as the location of seating, lighting, and types of trees to be planted. It is expected the final plans will be completed in July, with funding for construction being considered through the Long Term Plan process.
Between November 2009 and January 2010 the Council consulted the public and stakeholders on design options for the redevelopment of Baring Square East, and options for creating visual links and ensuring consistency between Baring Squares East and West. The Council considered the responses from the public and took advice from staff and consultants in preparation of the preferred design, which is now being given effect to in detailed plans that will enable construction in the future.
Background
The upgrade of Baring Square East is the first of a number of projects identified in the Ashburton Town Centre Concept Plan
The upgrade of Baring Square East was identified as a priority in order to create
· A focus for Ashburton Town Centre
· A space that can be used in a variety of ways
· A more open environment in the Square that people are aware of and can see beyond to the surrounding area
· Design features that improve people’s feeling of safety and belonging
The next step is to take the projects to a more detailed level involving the preparation of design options and plans for their implementation as has been done for Barin Square East. Funding will be sought for implementing these projects through the Long Term Plan process.
