Weather warning could affect waste recovery service

Monday 7 May, 2018

With a Severe Gale Warning now in place for Canterbury south of the Rakaia River, the Ashburton District Council is advising that it may have to close the Ashburton and Rakaia Resource Recovery Parks tomorrow and Wednesday (8 and 9 May 2018). Kerbside collection services may also be affected.

“At this stage, we’re just giving residents a heads-up that the waste recovery service could be out of action for one or two days, as it’s not safe to operate the service in high winds. Please check prior to driving to the parks or putting your wheelie bins out that the service is operating,” Council Waste Recovery Manager Craig Goodwin says.

“We will continue to monitor the front as it develops today and into tomorrow morning. If it does appear that the predicted gales will hit, we’ll make a decision to close the parks and have a slip day for the kerbside collection service as soon as possible.”

If the kerbside collection service cannot operate on Tuesday, residents’ will need to follow the protocol for public holidays, and put their bins out one day later than scheduled. For instance, Tuesday’s collection would be picked up on Wednesday, Wednesday’s collection would be on Thursday, the Thursday collection would be Friday and Friday’s collection would happen on Saturday.

To see if the waste recovery service is operating, check the Council Facebook page, visit www.ashburtondc.govt.nz or download the free Antenno app, which is available from the App Store and Google Play. A notification will be sent to users’ phones who have downloaded the Antenno app.
