Street names to be corrected

‚ÄčThe current spelling of Ollivers Road will be corrected to Olivers Road to reflect the correct spelling of the family it was named after*. A section of Ollivers Road between the Ashburton River and the Methven Highway will also become Tavendale Road.

The correction to the Olivers Rd name follows submissions to the Ashburton District Council from ancestors of the Olivers family. The change of one section to Tavendale Rd was requested by Olivers Rd residents, who say the section of their road between Winchmore Hall and the North Branch of the Ashburton River, regularly causes confusion.

To drive from one end of Olivers Road to the other requires a diversion to cross the Ashburton River. While local residents are aware this needs to be done, it is confusing for other road users and could delay emergency services.

The name changes will not involve major costs and will be covered under the Council's existing roading budget.

*James Walter Oliver worked in the Ashburton county for 60 years, farming on the road currently known as 'Ollivers Road'. He was well also well known in the district as a threshing contractor.
