Open air fires will be permitted in Ashburton District from midnight Friday 21 April, when the Mid-South Canterbury Rural Fire Authority officially lifts the remaining fire restrictions in the district.
The Rural Fire Authority's decision will extend the Open Fire Season to the high country, after fire restrictions were lifted for the Ashburton plains on 16 March, 2017.
"Under the Open Fire Season Status, permits are not required for open air fires, however the community should continue observing responsible fire practices," Council Environmental Services Group Manager Jane Donaldson says.
While the Open Fire Season will come into effect from tomorrow night, Ms Donaldson says Environment Canterbury regulations prohibiting open air fires on properties less than two hectares will remain in place.
A Restricted Fire Season had been in place throughout Mid-South Canterbury since 28 February.
