New changes at the Ashburton Domain playground

Wednesday 2 May, 2018

A welcome upgrade at the Ashburton Domain playground will soon see families and visitors able to access brand new facilities, after a new toilet block was delivered to the Domain yesterday.

The four cubical, unisex facility arrived on a truck and was placed into position by a crane in front of the old toilet block, which Ashburton District Council will demolish once the new toilets have finished being installed.

Council Opens Spaces Manager David Askin says the new facilities are expected to be operational within the month.

“The playground continues to be a very popular attraction for families and we hope that with the installation of new facilities that they will help improve the playground experience even more. We’ll also be looking to complete landscaping in the area to make it an even more pleasant part of the Domain.

“They might be an overlooked convenience for some, but well designed and maintained public toilets can make a big difference to your visit and we’re pleased to be able to update the old facilities.”

The original toilets were installed in 1984 and are representative of a popular design from the time, with separate sides for men and women.

The roof for the new facilities will be installed in the next two weeks and the power and plumbing will be connected.

This is the third set of public toilets of this design that Council has installed or replaced in the district; the first at Hinds in 2016 and the second at Lake Camp last year.
