Level 1 water restriction imposed for district

Monday 19 December 2016

Ashburton District communities connected to a Council water scheme are being urged to be extra vigilant with water use from Wednesday 21 December when a Level 1 water restriction comes into effect.

Residents in Ashburton, Hakatere, Methven, Rakaia, Chertsey, Fairton, Hinds and Mt Somers will be on a Level 1 water restriction from 21 December until further notice, as dry summer conditions begin setting in.

“Although we have received unseasonal rain recently, the situation can change rapidly if we experience a few consecutive dry days. As a precaution, we would like the community to be careful with their water use,” Service Delivery Group Manager Neil McCann says.

A Level 1 water restriction allows residents connected to a Council water scheme to use a water hose on even or odd days of the calendar, depending on their street address number.

Communities already on a water restriction, including Mayfield, Dromore, Montalto and Methven Springfield, will remain on their water restriction levels until further advised.

Mr McCann says that although water restrictions will be in place, there are resources available, such as the SMART Watering campaign, which can help residents make the most of water for their gardens.

More information on the SMART Watering campaign and the district’s water restrictions can be found on Council's website.
