Councillor Liz McMillan was today elected as the new Ashburton District Council representative on the Ashburton Safer Community Council Trust Board.
The appointment of Cr McMillan was in response to the recently released Section 17A Community Safety Report that recommended the immediate reappointment of an elected member to the Ashburton Safer Community Council Trust Board. Former Councillor Don McLeod has until now been the interim Council appointee.
The Section 17A Community Safety Report was completed in August 2017 by Peter Winder, following the review of a range of community safety activities and services in Ashburton in early 2017.
Councillors today adopted the three recommendations from the report. Along with Cr McMillan's appointment, these included the Council's Chief Executive considering the appointment of a Community Safety Champion at senior management level, and the revision of the Service Level Agreement with Safer Ashburton to re-orient funding to implement the international Safer Communities Model, which has been adopted by the majority of other regions in New Zealand.
Under the Local Government Amendment Act 2014, councils must regularly assess the cost effectiveness of delivering all of their services to the community to ensure they are providing value for money.
