Council to investigate potential joint venture to help eradicate problem pigeons

Ashburton District Council is investigating the feasibility of entering into a joint venture with businesses in the Ashburton Central Business District (CBD) whose premises are being affected by pigeons.

The concept of a joint venture has come about in response to the number of businesses located in the CBD recently requesting help from Council to eradicate these common pests.

Council's Environmental Monitoring Manager Rick Catchpowle, says those businesses with affected sites should contact Council if they would like to be part of what would be a collective eradication programme.

"Although pest control is not a Council function in Ashburton District, it has come to our attention that more and more businesses are looking to Council to try and help fix the problem," he says.

"We are requesting that people contact us if they would like to become part of a potential joint venture which would see affected businesses share the overall cost of an initial pigeon eradication programme in the CBD.

"Once we have established businesses' interest levels in this project, we can move forward with getting cost estimates and working on possible timings."

Businesses in the CBD have until 30 January 2015 to advise Council if they wish to be part of the venture.
