An Ashburton District Council representative has been appointed to the Hakatere Marae Komiti for the first time - a move that will strengthen ties between the Council and urban Maori in Ashburton.
Councillor Ken Cutforth was today appointed to the Komiti.
Cr Donna Favel said it was important the Council had formal representation on the Komiti.
The Hakatere Marae Komiti Tiamana (Chairperson) Tiipene Philip last month formally requested an official Council representative to join the Komiti.
Cr Cutforth will attend the Komiti's meetings on the second Monday of each month.
The Council also decided to develop an appointments policy, so that similar requests can easily be addressed in the future.
