Ashburton District Council has approved additional funding to bring the Mt Somers Fire Shed to the standard of other rural fire sheds.
The project will now receive an additional $76,000 following a more detailed estimate of the total cost of the extension.
Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay says the additional funds will make sure Mt Somers fire service members have access to the same facilities as other members throughout the District.
"Rural fire sheds in other towns are equipped with a meeting room, kitchen and toilet. This increase in funds will make sure Mt Somers also has these facilities."
The additional funds will also allow for construction at the fire shed of a disability accessible toilet for residents. This inclusion follows requests by the community to have a public toilet available at McClimont Green which is adjacent to the fire shed.
The funding increase for the project brings the total cost of the Mt Somers Fire Shed Extension project to $121,000.
