Most of the rural townships or communities have, at least, a green area if not a domain set aside for the enjoyment of residents and visitors.
Many of these are cared for by either a Domain Board (of local residents) or a local community group. Of these, Methven and Rakaia would be the largest and best known.
Methven's Domain is operated by a Domain Board, whereas the smaller recreational reserves are maintained by Parks and Recreation staff. These reserves and plantings reflect the area's relationship to the natural beauty of the area.
Rakaia is the northern gateway to Ashburton's parks and reserves.
Once again, the domain is operated by a board while the smaller recreational reserves and town plantings are maintained by parks and recreation staff. Many of the plantings reflect the area's affinity with Rakaia's braided river.
