Awa Awa Rata

Awa Awa Rata reserve (Valley of Rata) is situated at the end of McLennans Bush Road, at the foot of the Mt Hutt Range. It is bounded on the north west by the Pudding Hill Scenic Reserve, a much larger, heavily bushed area. The reserve is is 14 kilometres, by road, from Methven, and 2 kilometres from the Mt Hutt Skifield turn off.

This reserve has become widely known throughout the region for its display of rhododendrons in the spring (established and maintained by the Rhododendron Society) and the beautiful virgin bush throughout the year. Although more popular in the warmer months, early afternoon shadows in winter result in low temperatures, particularly in frosty weather. For all this it is an attractive passive reserve and is popular with picnic parties and day-trippers.

The adjoining scenic reserve provides two bush walking tracks which lead to either Scott's Saddle or the ridge above the reserve for a magnificent view across the district.
