Tree-lined roadsides, superb parks and gardens signal the pride that parks and recreation staff have in their surroundings. Well-planned and meticulously tended road berms, parks, reserves and gardens are an attractive feature of the town. Pride of place would have to be Baring Square East.
Baring Square East has been designed around the town's landmark clock tower, various monuments and the fountain. All this set in a semi-formal area comprising mature trees, camellias, rhododendrons, roses and mass plantings of strikingly coloured annuals.
Ashburton's two main roads are tree-lined, in many places, and some of these areas are also under-planted with masses of daffodils. Many areas throughout the town are planted with bright colourful annuals as well. Forming a spectacular site in the retail area is the town green planted with blocks of oak and ash trees. Background to these is the planting of a mixed shrub border that camouflages the railway corridor.
Many passive recreation areas and parks are located throughout the town's residential areas. Some have small playgrounds and all are for the enjoyment of both residents and visitors. Many traffic islands and road berms are also planted with shrubs, grasses or annuals to help soften the starkness.
