              CAMPING GROUNDS AND RESERVES

               

              The Council owns three principal camping grounds.

               

              RANGITATA RIVER MOUTH

              Situated on the north bank of the Rangitata River mouth, the camping ground has 24 powered caravan sites and considerable space available for non-powered camp sites.  Kitchen, laundry and ablution blocks are provided.  It has some recreational facilities – tennis, quoits and volleyball areas.

              The camping ground has become a very popular area for people fishing for salmon and whitebait and increasingly for families seeking a quiet holiday.

              The camp operates from August 1 to March 31. The nearest shopping is at Hinds.

              Camp Fees:

              Unpowered 

              $15.00 2 people per day
              $550.00 Season for 91 days

               

              Powered

              $17.00 2 people per day

               

              Seasonal

              $630 (91 days = $6.92 per night)

               

              Storage

              $1.50 Unpowered
              $4.00 Powered

               

               

              $6.00 extra adult per day
              Children 1-5 years free
              5-15 years $2.00 per day

              ASHBURTON HOLIDAY PARK

               This park is situated in the Tinwald Domain, accessed off Maronan Road.The camp has 20 powered sites, 25 non-powered sites, one cabin (sleeps four) and a backpackers area (sleeps 20).Kitchen, ablution and laundry facilities are available.

              The camp is adjacent to the domain's attractions including the Plains historical and vintage railway, the Lynn Woodworking Museum, the vintage car club, tennis courts, swimming pool, cycle challenge track, miniature railway and the lake.

              The camp is about five minutes from the Tinwald shopping centre and about 10 minutes drive from Lake Hood.

              Camp Fees: Powered sites $26/night – two adults
              Cabin $45/night - two adults
                $15/night – extra adult
                $10/night - extra children
              Backpackers $13 per night – per person
              Tent No Power $11/night - One Adult
                $6/night - One Child

              RAKAIA GORGE

              Situated on the South Terrace of the Upper Rakaia River, the camp contains 48 non powered sites over an area of about 2.2 hectares. The camp is accessed off the Inland Scenic Route immediately south of the Rakaia “high bridge”.

              Rakaia Camping Ground

              The camp is leased to Rakaia Gorge Camp Society. Contact 03 302 9353.

              The camp is very popular with fishermen and is an ideal stop for travellers on the Inland Scenic Route.  Nearest shopping is at Methven.

              The camp area affords magnificent views over the braided river.

              There is a Site Supervisor October to April inclusive. At other times an honesty box system applies.

               

              Camp fees are $7.50 per person. Children under 12 Free

              Hot showers available during season included in camp fee.

               

              HAKATERE

              The camping area at Hakatere is located towards end of the road opposite the Hall and entrance into the Lower Hut settlement. Camping is also permitted in the upper Reserve area adjacent to nosey parker point.

              Public toilets are provided only.

              Camp fee:
                                  $4 per night
                                  $20 per week
                                  $125 per 3 months
                                  $10 per week or part thereof storage of vehicle unoccupied

                                  All charges are GST inclusive.

               

              RESERVE AREAS

              -          Lake Clearwater

              Situated on the South end of Lake Clearwater immediately adjoins to the hut sites. A basic reserve area where overnight camping is permitted.

              Lake Clearwater Reserve has an honesty box provided. The camp fee is $4/night.

              Toilet, water (requires to be boiled for drinking) and a hall are provided in Lake Clearwater side but can be used by all campers.

              Lake Clearwater has great views of both lakes and mountains. Jet boating is permitted on Lake Camp.

               

              -          Kowhai Flat

              Situated on a private farm (Redcliff Station) land approximate 27KM northwest of Methven – please follow the signs along the road. Onsite facilities are very basic long drop toilets. Camp fee $2/night. Campers can access the Rakaia River for fishing activities.

               

              -          Rakaia Huts Reserve

              At Rakaia Hut accessed off Kingsburys Road, some sites are available at “donation rate levels”. Camping is permitted overnight but not long term. Toilet facilities only are provided.

               

               

              -         Taylor Stream, Bowyers Stream and Hinds River at north of Mayfield
              These are basically picnic area but overnight stay is permitted with self-contained caravan. Each of these locations is adjacent to the highway. Toilet facilities are provided.”
