Situated on the north bank of the Rangitata River mouth, the camping ground has 24 powered caravan sites and considerable space available for non-powered camp sites.  Kitchen, laundry and ablution blocks are provided.  It has some recreational facilities – tennis, quoits and volleyball areas.

The camping ground has become a very popular area for people fishing for salmon and whitebait and increasingly for families seeking a quiet holiday.

The camp operates from August 1 to March 31. The nearest shopping is at Hinds.

Camp fees:

Unpowered  $8 per night
Powered $10 per night
Seasonal $460 (91 days = $5 per night)

RAKAIA GORGE

Situated on the South Terrace of the Upper Rakaia River, the camp contains 48 non powered sites over an area of about 2.2 hectares. The camp is accessed off the Inland Scenic Route immediately south of the Rakaia “high bridge”.

Rakaia Camping Ground

The camp is leased to Rakaia Gorge Camping. Contact 03 302 9353.

The camp is very popular with fishermen and is an ideal stop for travellers on the Inland Scenic Route.  Nearest shopping is at Methven.

The camp area affords magnificent views over the braided river.

Payment is by “honesty box” at present, but this is likely to change.

RESERVE AREAS

Council maintains a number of reserves where “freedom camping” is permitted.

At Rakaia Huts accessed off Acton Road, some sites are available at “donation rate levels”.  Camping is permitted overnight but not long term.  Toilet facilities only are provided.

A similar situation exists at Hakatere (lower level). Both these areas afford the visitor the experience of the river mouth environment.

At Taylors Stream, Bowyers Stream and Hinds River at Mayfield, all on the Inland Scenic Route, travellers who are primarily self-contained may camp overnight.  Each of these locations are adjacent to the highway.  Toilet facilities are provided at Taylors Stream.
