Business Estate - Ashburton District Council

Introduction

The Business Estate in North East Ashburton was a key outcome from the Ashburton Development Plan that was consulted on in 2004/2005 and adopted by the Council in June 2005. The Council has been working on this project since that time. The total area of the development is 123 hectares.

The Development Plan was prepared in response to the continued growth in the Ashburton District, and in particular enquiries for developed industrial land from outside the District.

For the 2001-2006 census period, growth in population was recorded at 7.6%.

Further planning for the District included the Transportation study, to ensure that key infrastructure was identified and developed in a way to maximise efficiency.

Transport links to the State Highway and Main Trunk Rail Line offer transport efficiencies as well as removing traffic pressure from the centre of Ashburton, including the potential for rail freight to be loaded in the North East area, rather than the Town Centre. The development includes the provision to move the rail yards out of the central Ashburton business area to the new development. Encouraging greater use of rail is a key outcome.

Services to the development are currently being installed and the subdivision plan for the first stage has been lodged. It is programmed for the physical construction to be completed for this first stage in the 2009 calendar year.

The development will be high quality, with significant work being committed to landscaping and easy access to and around the area.
