Council must collect enough in rates income to fund its expenditure for the year as they are required by law to have a balanced budget.
Your total rates are made up of a variety of different types of rates for the variety of services provided. These include:
General Rate
Calculated on the capital value of your property.
Uniform annual general charge
Every property pays the same amount, regardless of the value of the property. Examples of services funded from this type of rate include the Riverside Sport and Leisure Centre.
Targeted rate
Either a uniform rate (every property paying the rate pays the same amount) or calculated on the capital value of the property. Targeted rates are used to ensure only those receiving the service help pay for it. Examples of services funded from this type of rate include water and wastewater.
Roading rate
Calculated the same way as the general rate but rated separately to clearly show the costs of maintaining the district’s roads.
Rates Calculator Spreadsheet
The rates workbook contains sheets for each region of the Ashburton district. It is MS Excel 97-2003 format so should be compatible with all versions of Office/Excel.
The individual sheets are LOCKED with the exception of the New Capital Value cell. Enter the value of your property into this cell and the rate information will be calculated and displayed.
