Overview
Rates are a charge against a property and set by your local and regional councils in compliance with the Local Government (Rating) Act 2002.
The rating year is from 1 July to 30 June and rates are split over 6 instalments (every two months).
Each year the Council’s Annual Plan sets out what the Council proposes to do in regards services provided and programmed works to be undertaken.
Rates are used as a way of funding these intended services and works and provide approximately 39% of the Council’s total income.
The types of services the Council provides include roading and footpaths, wastewater, stormwater, water, parks and reserves, cemeteries, emergency management, library, refuse collection, resource recovery parks and landfills, economic development, tourism and promotion, resource management, social services, elderly housing and public toilets.
Environment Canterbury
The Council has an arrangement to collect rates on behalf of Environment Canterbury (Canterbury Regional Council).
The Ashburton District Council is only a collection agency. If you have any queries regarding regional council rates charged or services supplied, please contact Environment Canterbury directly.
