ASHBURTON ZONE COMMITTEE

Ashburton District Council is working with Environment Canterbury and Canterbury Water to establish the Ashburton Zone Water Management Committee.

We are now seeking between 4 and 6 community representatives to be on the Ashburton Zone Committee. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the future of Ashburton District and the Canterbury region.

The committee will work with the communities within the Ashburton Zone to develop strategies, tactics and activities (Zone Implementation Programme) to give effect to the Canterbury Water Management Strategy fundamental principles and targets for the Zone. These targets include ecosystem health/biodiversity (including water quality), drinking water, water-use efficiency, irrigated land area, recreational and amenity opportunities, natural character of braided rivers, kaitiakitanga and regional/national economy.

Information meetings

We are hosting three information evenings within the district for people interested in applying to be members of the Ashburton Zone Committee. These will be held on the following dates:

Methven Heritage Centre Tuesday 22 June        7:30 pm
Ashburton Masonic Centre Thursday 24 June       7:30 pm
Rakaia Memorial Hall Tuesday 29 June        7:30 pm

The Rakaia evening is a joint session with the Selwyn-Waihora Zone.

Further information on the Canterbury Water Management Strategy, the Ashburton Zone Committee and associated committee appointment process is available from the Canterbury Water website: http://www.canterburywater.org.nz
