WHAT IS A BYLAW?

A Bylaw is a rule or regulation made by a Local Authority such as the Ashburton District Council.

A Local Authority may only make a bylaw if it is authorised to do so by an Act of Parliament.

The Local Government Act 2002 empowers a Local Authority to make bylaws on a diverse range of subjects. Some other Acts also empower Local Authorities to make bylaws on specific topics.

LEGISLATION  AFFECTING  THE  COUNCIL

The principal empowering Act for the Ashburton District Council is the Local Government Act 2002 and its amendments.  There are numerous other Government Statutes and regulation which dictate, control or empower actions of Council and its citizens.  The more common ones are:
