July-August 2012 survey results showing traffic using SH1 Ashburton Bridge
These survey results show the number and types of vehicles using Ashburtons SH1 Bridge, where they are coming from and where they are heading to.
There are four pages of results – one page for each of the peak times of the day the survey was carried out: 7.45-9.15am; 11.30am-1.30pm; 2.30pm-3.30pm; 4.30-6pm.
An additional two pages show the vehicle counts and types at each camera location during the above time periods.
The Ashburton District Council commissioned this detailed survey to assess traffic numbers, types of vehicles, and movement of vehicles crossing the bridge, to gain a greater understanding of the need for a second bridge in Ashburton.
Peak times were the focus of the survey because these are the times of the day the bridge is most congested. Whether or not a new bridge is needed comes down to traffic congestion.
Two Possible Access Sites Identified for the Second Urban Bridge
As a result of two years of investigation work, Council has identified that a bridge linking Chalmers Avenue with the area east of Tinwald to be the best possible option for the bridge.
Through technical studies and consultation with the community in 2010, Council identified two possible routes for the bridge, close to the urban area or further east.
The proposed sites are:
· Chalmers Avenue to east Tinwald (urban)
· Chalmers Avenue to east of Tinwald (rural)
These options indicate the two sites that best meet the site selection criteria and addresses issues and concerns raised by the community.
Public Consultation
Council is now seeking feedback from the community on the two possible access routes identified.
Public Consultation resumed on 14 August 2012 and runs through to 21 September 2012
Public Open Days
The Ashburton community were invited to Open Days on 24th and 25th August to learn more about the 2nd bridge and more than 200 people attended.
