The Ashburton District Physical Activity Strategy was developed in 2006 through a joint process between Council and a range of other agencies with a strong interest in promoting physical activity in the district. The purpose of the strategy was to identify ways to get more people in the district to be more active, more often.
A number of actions have been completed since the first strategy was adopted, including the development of; a sport and recreation directory, a walking and cycling strategy and ongoing progress towards a new aquatic centre and stadium. The strategy has provided increased opportunities for collaboration and communication between a range of different stakeholders. A key challenge for the future is to ensure that this progress continues.
Active Ashburton (the physical activity strategy implementation group) has agreed that it is now timely to review the strategy to ensure that the vision and goals for the district remain the same and to develop new actions for the future. The strategy will be reviewed using a consultative process consisting of four facilitated community workshops and a four week community consultation period.
The workshops are open for anyone in the community to attend and will provide an opportunity for all to discuss what they see as important aspects or issues facing physical activity in the district for the next ten years.
The workshops will be held on the following dates.
